Spotlight #18: Unraveling the Mysteries of St. Raphael’s Ruins

Seeking a journey back in time? Dive into the enchanting landscape of St. Raphael’s Ruins. Amidst South Glengarry’s myriad attractions, these ruins have carved a unique niche. They stand as a testament to a 1970 fire that devastated the historical Roman Catholic Church, leaving only its mighty walls behind. By 1999, its significance was recognized, and it was crowned a National Historic Site.

Open daily, the site becomes even more alive on weekends between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM when curators share tales of its rich past. Beyond its historical allure, the ruins double up as a photogenic spot and a venue for diverse events, from intimate weddings to vibrant concerts. Keep up with their event calendar here: St. Raphael’s Ruins National Historic Site.

21 Reasons Why We Love South Glengarry: St. Lawrence River and Fishing [15 of 21]

South Glengarry, with its picturesque landscapes and vibrant culture, has always been close to our hearts. Join Bill MacDonald and I on a 21-week adventure as we reveal the charms of South Glengarry that often remain undiscovered, even by its own residents.

Reason #15: The Alluring St. Lawrence River and Its Rich Fishing Culture

SHIP Alert! If you’re in South Glengarry, you might frequently hear the excited shouts of “SHIP!”, especially during gatherings by the St. Lawrence River. The sight of these majestic ocean-bound vessels sailing by is nothing short of breathtaking. For a touch of fun, jet skis often play in the wake of these passing giants (safely, of course!). To get in on the action and predict ship timings, we personally recommend the “Marine Traffic” app, though several others serve the same purpose.

Biking by the Riverside: Stretch your legs on approximately 40 km of biking trails extending from Lancaster to Morrisburg. Most of these paths run alongside the stunning river, offering scenic views as you pedal.

Boating Bliss: South Glengarry’s waterfront invites boating enthusiasts with several launch areas. Marinas like Mac’s in Lancaster, Raisin River in South Lancaster, and Creg Quay in Bainsville, ensure you’re never too far from a boating adventure.

Fishing Adventures: The St. Lawrence River promises an exhilarating fishing experience. Whether you’re an avid angler or someone looking to relax, the river is teeming with varieties like Pike, Musky, Bass, and Walleye. And come winter, witness the quaint ice villages near Lancaster, brimming with ice-fishing enthusiasts.
